1983 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler

Change of plans:

I've decided based on the input from others to rethink the plans of using the scout front axle (that and the 71 Blazer I just bought for parts). The blazer axle will need to be narrowed down to the scout width, approx. 1.5" on the right and 5.5" on the left. Including have one axle resplined and a new one made will run about $265 from Moser Engineering. By doing this I won't need to move the springs out.

Well, I've finally decided to go ahead and do a spring over axle (SOA) swap using Dana 44 axles from an 79 Scout II. I plan on using these axles at full width, I'm not going to cut them down.

Understandings:

  • The above measuremnets are from the inside of the knuckle.
  • Since I am using these axles at full width my wheels will be moved out approximately 1.5 inches (58" vs. 55.1")
  • The Scout axles have no caster built in, so the knuckles will have to be rotated to build caster back into axle. (Thanks to Lars for this write up)
  • To use the front axle at it's original width I will need to relocate the springs out 2 inches on each side (thanks Mark Courtenay for providing a guide for this)
  • Thanks to JeepGod for the write up on how to set up the Brakes
  • Thanks to Bill for the steering info
